Mini Review: Batman Arkham City – Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC

Robin plays pretty much identical to his associate

In this DLC set after Arkham City’s main campaign, you initially play as Robin who has been sent into Harley Quinn’s layer to find the missing Batman.  Robin has almost exactly the same moves and equipment as Batman with just a few changes in items and attack animations.  Unsurprisingly, a lot of the goons make jokes about how “it’s just the boy wonder”, “we can take him!” and the like only to promptly get their asses handed to them.  Game-play then later switches to Batman (in a flashback to before he was captured) and then back and forth again a few times.  The DLC is a decent enough duration taking me just over 2 hours start to finish with a few checkpoint resets in there.  As usual, there are side missions and collectibles that you can partake in if you’re into that sort of thing and that may add on another hour or two if you wanted to 100% everything.

The Batman maintains his excellent bedside manner

I might just be rusty, not having played a Batman game for nearly a year now, but combat seemed more difficult than before with both much more numerous combatants as well as more varied enemy types needing different special attacks each which disrupted combat flow and combos.  This DLC was most likely aimed at the more seasoned player who has already blown through the end-game of the main campaign and is ready to take on challenges of the same magnitude.  There are also many more of the mandatory forced stealth “predator” sections where everyone is armed with guns and you must sneak around totally undetected.  While these are fun for a while, personally, I found them to wear a bit thin.  Stealth is usually just what I would do for a while at the start of an engagement until I am found and then take everyone out noisily and painfully.  Being forced to do whole sections full stealth starts to grate after a while if it’s not your preferred play-style.

There is no shortage of large group encounters

Summary

Harley Quinn’s Revenge offers more of the same pleb-punching action as the original Arkham City for fans of the base game.  While it doesn’t offer add many new innovations or changes, the fantastic game-play remains the same so if you’re aching for more Arkham check this one out.
