Mini Review: Fallout New Vegas Old World Blues DLC

Talking brains with monitors for appendages.

Set in 1950’s science-fiction B-movie backdrop, Old World Blues starts off with you being  tricked into tinkering with a strange satellite only to find yourself teleported away to “The Big Empty” basin, a dedicated scientific research station, and immediately find out you have had brain, heart and spine removed.  You must help the mad scientists of the Think Tank (who are also brains in jars) do their science and fight their battles for them to get your missing organs back and along the way encounter all kind of science-fiction tropes like brains in jars, robot scorpions, cyborgs and many many more.  “Old World Blues” refers to a syndrome where people are fixated on the past and can’t see the present or the future for what it is.  Most of the inhabitants of the Big Empty suffer from old world blues being quite fixated on the way things used to be.

Giant killer robot scorpions of death

You will encounter many colourful characters in this DLC which is a stark contrast from the fairly boring cast thus far.  Highlights include a toaster that wants to destroy the world and an ex high-school principal now conducting anti-Communist research.  Quests are still mostly fetch and fight, but still manage to have more variety than previous DLC or main quests and the interesting areas, characters and scenery make for a much more interesting time travelling around this new area.  There is less combat in this DLC but since you get to take all your gear with you and most of it is against quirky robot enemies, it’s a lot more interesting.

Cyber attack dogs. Everything sci-fi needs.

Summary

This is my favourite New Vegas DLC so far and I was laughing pretty much the whole way through it at all the cheesy cliches and tropes and insane characters.  If you’re at all a fan of science-fiction, this one is definitely worth checking out.

Final Score: 4/5
